Cooking in Traditional Chitrali House

In the far-flung villages of Chitral, northern Pakistan, women are traditionally involved in unrewarded labors such as cooking, house-cleaning, cattle-raising and knitting, in addition to a range of embroidery and farm-related occupations. This has created dependency syndromes among the womenfolk, who are less likely to influence decision-making, owing to reliance on others for economic needs. The situation can only be remedied through standard education for girls, vocational training, honing the existing skills of woman artisans and awareness-raising schemes and exposure opportunities.
